MATADOR

Author: geenna | Date: 13/07/2017

Where does the name Matador come from? From what we’ve heard you spent quite a lot of time in Spain when you were younger didn’t you? Yes, I spent a lot of my summers in Spain as a kid, and still do now… as a big kid! Years ago though, I used to be sitting around watching the TV, when bullfighting was on. I know it’s a gruesome horrible thing, I have no sort of connection to it whatsoever, but I guess the drama, the theme around the matador, intrigued me. It was a performance of something dark and mysterious, which was like the music I was writing, so it seemed a fitting alias. My parents are mostly based in Gran Canaria so we always try to visit them as much as possible still, it’s a beautiful part of the world. You are a sound engineer, producer, DJ and also chef… What do you like doing the most? I like them all, and like anything in moderation. I feel like if I’m struggling sometimes in the studio, cooking helps to bridge the next studio session, they’re all things I love doing, thankfully it’s become my job. What does it mean for you to play live? It’s a constant challenge to be honest… because I play ‘live’ (which basically means in our realm, you play only your own productions, remixes/edits via midi controllers, computers etc) I’m consistently in the studio every week, writing new music thus making things fresh every weekend for both the people and for myself. Unfortunately I can’t just go onto Beatport and download new music for the shows this weekend, I’m in the studio writing the new stuff for this weekend… it’s challenging, let’s just say that. Please tell us about your new label RUKUS. Is there any new interesting artist that you would like to sign to the label? Or any that you have just signed that you’re particularly excited about? The label has been one of the most organic things to develop from my Matador project. It was originally set up as an outlet for releasing my own music, allowing me flexibility in my release schedule, and pretty soon we were arranging remixes with an incredible collection of artists. I’m really excited to introduce new artists to RUKUS this year, there’s a wealth of creative talent out there and we have some really cool releases coming. We’ve just had a stomping EP from Carlo Ruetz and Fabio Florido’s Levity EP is out this week – superb music from the boys. Focusing on new artists later in the year and I’ve had some really exciting music through, but all plans are under wraps till then. Do you prefer playing at big festivals or in smaller venues? I love playing a mixture of both. I enjoy all the madness of a festival and playing on lineups with friends that I don’t get to tour often enough with. Smaller venues are obviously more intimate, but offer their own level of madness. So I try to get a good balance across the year. Tell us a little about your relationship/history with Ibiza. Ibiza is a place I’ve enjoyed from a young age, I’ve had plenty of holidays there down through the years with family and friends. When I started DJing as a teenager, the island really came to the front of my mind as somewhere I wanted to be every summer and in my early 20’s we enjoyed some serious partying. Of course the dream was to play, and joining the ENTER. crew was an incredible experience. I love my time on the island; great clubs, great crowds, great friends and great food. What are your projects for this summer on the island? Lots of cool shows this year, back with the chaps from RESISTANCE at their new night at Privilege, excited to play that club too. I’ve got a couple of shows at DC10 for Paradise, which are always fun and Cocoon in September, which will be a really special one for me. I’ll try and take a couple of days off around one or two of the shows, to enjoy Ibiza. When you are not playing, what kind of music do you like to listen to? Anything and everything. It varies so widely – yesterday we had a hip hop day in the kitchen while working on emails. Sunday night I was listening to James Bond soundtracks. When I travel, I listen to Alan Partridge audio books – these are excellent. If you had to associate your musical style with a recipe, what would it be and why?! Hot Chocolate Fondant – crispy, crunchy on the outside – hot, gooey in the middle. The dish that you most love cooking? Anything on a BBQ and also caramel shortbread. And finally… are you Night or Day? Night. www.facebook.com/MatadorOfficial

You have been DJing since the 90s, got signed with remixes on labels such as Get Physical and Madtech, won the DJ Award, only to name a few of your successes. How do you feel about all this recognition?   These last years I have felt much better as I looked back and saw that I have made music for labels like Get Physical, Cocoon Recordings, 8Bit, Saved, Moon Harbour, Hot Creations etc... which gives me comfort, but the truth is that I only have one prize and recognition isn’t something that drives me crazy as otherwise I would be crazy. Many DJs with much less experience have had more rec...

On 13th July, Km5 will celebrate its 23rd anniversary, a key celebration to understand the history of this establishment What began as the dream of the German Josch Genske more than 23 years ago, became reality when he inaugurated in 1994 the oasis of happiness that is Km5. His love for the island made him decide to convert a typical farm house located on the edge of the road that connects Ibiza with San José in the famous place that it is today. Later and together with his partner, Ana Megido, they established the pillars of one of Ibiza's venues with more charm and reputation. Since 1994 ...

What have been your artistic influences so far? That’s a broad question and could fill a book! Basically everything about life is an inspiration. My biggest influences lately have been moving to Ibiza, our daughter but also countless festivals and parties. Please tell us about your lasting collaboration with Diynamic. Diynamic and HOSH, even though I spread my wings now with my recent album and own label, are and probably always will be a bound. We are looking back on a history of over 10 years. I put a lot effort into this label and so vice versa. It´s a big part of my musical identity....

It's summer; work, outings, jams, noise, visitors, friends... With so much movement and overstimulation of the senses it is very easy to get out of your centre and let yourself be driven by your impulses. But what does it mean to stay in your centre? We live in a dual universe. Our brain has two hemispheres (left-right), what is above is below and what is inside is outside. Our equilibrium lies at the centre of this three-dimensional equation. "Stay in your centre" is not a set phrase. It is a literal, physical sensation that occurs when you focus your PRESENCE on the HEART. The heart is ...

Since the 1970's the word stress has burst into our vocabulary thanks to the studies of Hans Selye, who introduced the concept of stress and the relationship between stress and disease for the World Health Organization (WHO). Stress is not always a bad thing. In daily life the level of stress is important; in addition, there is a difference between “eustress”, which is a term for positive stress, and “distress”, which refers to negative stress. Eustress, or positive stress, focuses on energy, motivates and improves performances. In contrast, distress, or negative stress, causes anxiety...

You were one of the main DJ residents of Space Ibiza, with Carl Cox crowning you as King of the Terrace and now you’re a resident of the new haunt Hï Ibiza. What do you think of the new club? I think the new club is amazing, it’s a great venue and I think Ibiza needed something new. It’s fresh and exciting and a purpose built club, which you don’t find a lot of nowadays. The main room called the Theatre is made for big room music and in contrast to this there is the Club room that is like a dark basement with low ceilings so it caters to both sides of the musical spectrum. ...

What to do when it gets hot in Ibiza? Drink a cold beer, take a swim, relax? How about incorporating all of the above and also getting some exercise? Walking Ibiza is starting up kayaking after founder Toby Clarke started paddling himself and thought how wonderful it would be to share the experience, so that’s what he did.   Toby’s favourite route is from the beach of San Miguel, which incorporates everything a kayak tour should.
